"EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING, sound designer Antwan Williams and audio producer Earlonne Woods head to work just a few miles north of San Francisco. They spend the day in the media lab, working on their podcast: outlining narratives, interviewing subjects, editing tape. Other than meals, their only interruptions come when a correctional officer asks them to step outside for count.
"It’s really our creation, the 3 of us, [me, Earlonne Woods and Antwan Williams], because one of the things that’s really important to me in this project—and I’ve talked a lot about it with the men—is trying to mirror the idea that inside and outside people can work together as equal colleagues, that I’m not pulling all the weight, they’re not pulling all the weight. We really are trying to work like we would if we were on the outside.
When Nigel found out about the Radiotopia podcast competition, the three of them put together a promo and agreed on a name: Ear Hustle. “It means eavesdropping,” Nigel said. “It’s pretty much exactly what we’re doing.”
